How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years. It was originally based on Taoist theories which is why Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine is focused on harmonising the whole body. One common translation of Tao is path. The main theory of Acupuncture is that we all have “qi”, a life enhancing energy which manifests within pathways in our bodies. A disruption to these pathways leads to a disharmony.

Currently, there are a few different theories about the way Acupuncture works:

Endorphins - Acupuncture releases endorphins into the bloodstream. Endorphins are the body's own natural painkillers and feel good chemical storehouse

Enhancing immunity – Acupuncture raises the levels of prostaglandins, white blood cells, gamma globulins, and antibody levels

Circulation – Acupuncture may release vasodilators such as Histamine, this may have the effect of dilating or constricting blood vessels

Neurotransmitters – Acupuncture may have a balancing effect on the levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin (feelings of wellbeing), and noradrenalin (stress hormone)

Gate Control – Acupuncture overloads nerve gates with impulses, thus reducing pain transmissions

My Training

As a Registered Acupuncturists, I have completed a Health Science degree. This was a four year full time course. As well as studying the history, philosophy, theories and practice of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, I studied Biochemistry, Western Nutrition, Human Biology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Research skills, Community Education & Public Health, and Business studies. In fact about 40% of the study covered Western Medicine subjects. Like Physiotherapists, Chiropractors and Osteopaths, Acupuncturists are Registered Health Care Providers, we are governed by the Chinese Medicine Registration Board of Victoria (CMRBV). I am also a member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS) and regularly participate in Continued Education and Training.
